On June 6 2008 the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) announced the outcome of the 26 GHz National Block Licences award process.
Twelve national channels have been licensed to 4 different bidders to support national point-to-point applications. Each licence runs for ten years and enables operators to upgrade the backbone of existing and future networks to provide innovative products and services to the consumer.

The regulations governing the 26 GHz national block licences are the Wireless Telegraphy (National Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint Block Licences) Regulations 2007 (S.I. 762 of 2007).
