Understand your rights, save money, and make informed decisions about your phone and broadband services.
Can my service provider change my contract and increase the price?
Yes, service providers can modify your contract, but they must follow strict rules:
- Provide at least one month’s notice before making changes;
- Send you a Contract Change Notification;
Automatic annual price increases in new contracts
Many, but not all, service providers now include automatic annual price increases in new contracts. These can be calculated in different ways:
- Using inflation metrics such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI);
- Fixed percentage increases;
- Combination of CPI and fixed percentage;
- Set monthly amount.
When to shop for a better deal
The best times to look for a new phone or broadband plan are:
- When you’re nearing the end of or after you’ve completed your minimum contract period (your service provider must inform you of the end of your contractual commitment);
- If you have received a Contract Change Notification with a right to exit the contract without cost.
Money-Saving tip: Most of these price increases happen in April. By switching to a new 12-month contract in April, your price will remain stable until April of the following year, at which point, you can switch again. If you are switching, you can check if a provider without a built-in increase has a plan that meets your needs.
Finding cheaper deals
- Not all service providers have built-in price increases;
- ComReg Compare can help, and lists plans that don’t have annual increases;
- Read contract terms carefully;
- Ask providers to clarify any unclear details;
- Don’t be afraid to switch if you find a better deal.
I’m still in contract – what are my options?
Before making any moves, carefully review your contract details:
- Check the contract duration (most are between 12 and 24 months);
- Understand early termination charges;
- Investigate potential phone unlocking fees.
By staying informed and proactive, you can save money and find the best phone or broadband plans for your needs.
