ComReg under its Test & Trial Ireland programme has awarded a test licence to researchers at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and CONNECT, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks & Communications at TCD. This licence facilitates tests of next generation communication networks (5G) under real-world conditions, allowing researchers to take into consideration the effect of the environment, such as buildings and geographical features, on coverage and connection speed of a mobile network.
The TCD research will explore ways of delivering faster internet speeds, more reliable mobile phone coverage, and new applications such as remote medical surgery.
ComReg has a statutory obligation to promote innovation and Test & Trial Ireland is a key part of this legislative responsibility. This is the first test licence awarded by ComReg in the frequency band 3.8 GHz to 4.2 GHz and highlights the value of academic research in the development of next generation networks.
