Satellite

This licensing scheme allows the use of satellite systems to facilitate transmissions of large amounts of data as is the case with news vans (SNG).

This licensing system includes fixed earth stations and transportable earth stations. This licence type will also cover teleport facilities consisting of two or more satellite earth stations that are capable of operating to multiple satellites. Satellite systems offer a high degree of flexibility to accommodate the broadband needs of today’s telecommunications networks.

Applicants should be aware that there are several satellite services which are licence exempt. Before applying for a licence, please check our licence exemptions page.

Guidelines

More information can be found in our guideline document – Guidelines for applicants for satellite earth station (SES) licences operating in spectrum above 3 GHz – 00/64R3.

Permitted Licence Exemptions for Terminals for Satellite Services

Certain Terminals for Satellite Services can operate in Ireland on a non-interference and non-protected licence-exempt basis in accordance with the requirements laid down in ComReg 20/47 (and any revisions thereof), and by Exemption Order S.I. No. 226/2020 – Wireless Telegraphy Act 1926 (Section 3) (Exemption of Terminals for Satellite Services) Order 2020.

Further Information can be found in ComReg 20/47, as amended – “Permitted Licence Exemptions for Terminals for Satellite Services”

Where a licence is required for a period less than 12 months, the fees are adjusted pro-rata as follows:

C = A x (B/12)

  • A = relevant annual licence fee set out above
  • B = number of whole months for which the licence is granted
  • C = appropriate fee to be paid.
