Satellite Earth Stations

This licensing regime allows the use of satellite systems to facilitate transmissions of large amounts of data as is the case with news vans (SNG).

This licensing system includes fixed earth stations and transportable earth stations. Satellite systems offer a high degree of flexibility to accommodate the broadband needs of today’s telecommunications networks.

Applying for a satellite earth station licence

Applicants must have a ComReg eLicensing account to submit an application for a fixed radio link licence. Accounts can be created at www.elicensing.comreg.ie

Permitted Licence Exemptions for Terminals for Satellite Services

Certain Terminals for Satellite Services can operate in Ireland on a non-interference and non-protected licence-exempt basis in accordance with the requirements laid down in ComReg 20/47 (and any revisions thereof), and by Exemption Order S.I. No. 226/2020 – Wireless Telegraphy Act 1926 (Section 3) (Exemption of Terminals for Satellite Services) Order 2020.
