Fixed Wireless Access Local Area (FWALA)

Short explanatory text

A Fixed Wireless Access Local Area (FWALA) licence allows the licensee to provide radio communication services between a base station and fixed subscriber terminals locations within a local area on a specific frequency band. Generally this licence is used to provide wireless broadband services to business and residential customers.

There are two spectrum bands identified for FWALA licensing:

  • 10.5 GHz band
  • 26 GHz band

Fees/Fee Calculator

The licence fees to be paid on, grant of and on each renewal of a FWALA licence are as set out below.

Up to 7MHz 1500
Over 7 MHz and up to 14 MHz 2000
Over 14 MHz and up to 28 MHz 2800

Where a licence is granted for a portion of a year the licence fee to be paid by the licensee shall be calculated as follows:

A x (B/12) = C

Where:

A is the relevant annual licence fee (e.g. €2800);

B is the number of whole months for which the licence is granted (if a licence is granted for a period of less than one month then, for the purpose of these calculations only, the licence shall be considered as a licence granted for a period of one month); and

C is the appropriate licence fee to be paid.

Regulations

The regulations governing the issue of Fixed Wireless Access Local Area licences are the:

  • Wireless Telegraphy (Fixed Wireless Access Local Area licence) Regulations, 2003 (S.I. 79 of 2003) and
  • Wireless telegraphy (Fixed Wireless Access Local Area licence) (amendment) Regulations, 2003 (S.I. 530 of 2003)
