The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today released its Quarterly Key Data Report on the Electronic Communications market for the period (1 April to 30 June), Q2 2024.
Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.67 million, a 0.6% increase this quarter and an increase of 3.1% compared to Q2 2023. Of these, over 763,000 were fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) subscriber lines representing 45.7% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in Q2 2024, up from 35.5% in Q2 2023. FTTP is the most purchased broadband technology and available at 68% of all premises (as measured by Eircodes) in Ireland. FTTP and/or Cable broadband is available at 81% of all premises (as measured by Eircodes) in Ireland. In terms of FTTP take-up, 47% of all premises with FTTP available had an active FTTP service at the end of Q2 2024.
On a monthly basis an average residential fixed broadband subscriber line used 433.1 GB of data, an increase of 13% since Q2 2023.
In Q2 2024, approximately 50% of fixed broadband subscriber lines had purchased broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps, with 13% purchasing broadband speeds equal to or greater than 1Gbps. Of the 763,677 FTTP subscriber lines, 83% have broadband speeds equal to or greater than 500 Mbps.
Total voice traffic minutes decreased by 3.9% since Q2 2023. Mobile minutes form the majority of voice minutes at 92%, with fixed minutes representing the remaining 8%.
On a monthly basis an average mobile voice subscriber used 164 minutes (5.2% annual decrease), sent 32 texts (1% annual decrease), and used 13.7GB of data (0.5% annual increase).
Total mobile subscriptions (including mobile broadband and machine-to-machine (M2M)) increased to 9.9 million in Q2 2024 – driven by a rise in post pay subscriptions which represent 76% of all mobile subscriptions. 5G subscribers increased to 1.71 million in Q2 2024 an increase of 32% since Q2 2023.
M2M subscriptions increased to 3.7 million, a 16% annual increase and made up 37.9% of all mobile subscriptions in Q2 2024.
