ComReg issues Electronic Communications Sector Quarterly Report for Q1 2024

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today released its Quarterly Key Data Report on the Electronic Communications market for the period (1 January to 31 March), Q1 2024.

Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.66 million, a 0.3% increase this quarter and an increase of 2.9% compared to Q1 2023. Of these, over 712,000 were fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) subscriber lines representing 43% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in Q1 2024, up from 33.1% in Q1 2023. FTTP is the most purchased broadband technology and available at 64% of all premises (as measured by Eircodes) in Ireland. FTTP and/or Cable broadband is available at 77% of all premises (as measured by Eircodes) in Ireland. In terms of FTTP take up, 45% of all premises with FTTP available had an active FTTP service at the end of Q1 2024.

On a monthly basis an average residential fixed broadband subscriber line used 431.8 GB of data, an increase of 6.5% since Q1 2023.

In Q1 2024, approximately 47% of fixed broadband subscriber lines had purchased broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps, with 12.2% purchasing broadband speeds equal to or greater than 1Gbps. Of the 712,616 FTTP subscriber lines, over 82% have broadband speeds equal to or greater than 500 Mbps.

Total voice traffic minutes decreased by 11.6% since Q1 2023. Mobile minutes form the majority of voice minutes at 90%, with fixed minutes representing the remaining 10%.

On a monthly basis an average mobile voice subscriber used 135 minutes (12.4% annual decrease), sent 22 texts (34% annual decrease), and used 13.9GB of data (2.8% annual increase).

Total mobile subscriptions (including mobile broadband and machine-to-machine (M2M)) increased to 9.8 million in Q1 2024 – driven by a rise in post pay subscriptions which represent 75% of all mobile subscriptions. 5G subscribers increased to 1.59 million in Q1 2024 an increase of 40% since Q1 2023.

M2M subscriptions increased to 3.6 million, a 21% annual increase and made up 37.4% of all mobile subscriptions in Q1 2024.
